“It has always been my dream to go to a coastal school that specializes in Hospitality and Tourism. I chose this major because, throughout my years growing up in Franklin County, I have realized that providing a positive, welcoming, and comforting environment greatly contributes to people's happiness. My experiences in customer service at the Bagel and I, working as a lifeguard at Cooper Cove Pool, and participating in various CTSOs and clubs at school have confirmed that I am a ‘people person.’ The Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) major aligns closely with my career aspirations. Having grown up near the lake and being surrounded by water, I developed an interest in boating and recreational activities. This has inspired me to pursue a role as the CEO of a yacht club. While I understand this is a specific career path with limited demand, I have several backup plans. These include becoming a hotel manager, owning a venue for weddings, event planning, and more.”

Miss McElvain’s community service includes Reading Buddies, Face Painting, SML Boat/Car Show, SML Wine Festival and SML Good Neighbors Helping Hands.

High School leadership, awards and activities include Distributive Education Clubs of America District President, Future Business Leaders of America Secretary, National Honor Society, Student Council Secretary, Fly Girls Captain, History Club Vice President and Students Against Bullying.

Miss McElvain is the owner of the local business, Call Claire, where she says, “I dog sit and babysit at reasonable prices with fabulous expectations”.

The members of Smith Mountain Lake Women’s Club hope you will join them in congratulating the 2025 SMLWC Scholarship recipient of Franklin County High School, Miss Claire McElvain.
